Introducing Sculptor Anne Marie Moss
I came to sculpture after a career as a theatre and TV prop maker in London and the South east. I returned to study sculpture in 1991 because of my love of carving and modelling throughout that career. I have had a studio in South Devon since 1996 here I have evolved process and developed through the experience of life, parenthood and nature along with various experiments with different materials including cement and recycled plastic. Most of my work is based on the human form and is often emotive. The stone is carved in a way that entices the viewer to engage with the senses; drawing attention to some areas and simplifying others. Ideas are formed from West Country stone and more recently Alabaster and Marble almost all stone I use is recycled. A little about process…. I have more than one project on the go at a time to avoid getting stuck and aiming to keep the work fresh; often stone is out on the bench weeks before I begin to carve and is left out whilst working on other sculptures. When working out ideas for more figurative sculptures I sketch the idea out in clay first but always with the stone shape and form in mind. The work develops gradually without imposing an idea onto the stone; carving in harmony with that particular stone shape and type. With the abstract pieces I work the stone direct. I love to work in this way and feel it has an impact on my more figurative work.
