Introducing artist Derek Dickinson

Bio

Derek Dickinson (b. 1960) is a contemporary painter and visual artist from southwest England. With a background in design, styling, and artist management, Derek spent much of his early career in London’s creative industries, working in film, photography, television, music videos, and performance. His experience as an assistant director and PR consultant in the music and entertainment industry shaped his unique artistic perspective. Returning to the South West, Derek pursued his passion for fine art, earning a BA (Hons) in Fine Art at Plymouth University (2010) and a Master of Arts in Contemporary Art Practice (2022). His work has been featured in prestigious exhibitions, including The Summer Exhibition 2020 at The Royal Academy, London, as well as in Berlin and across the UK. His paintings are held in permanent collections worldwide, spanning the USA, Canada, South Korea, Hong Kong, India, Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom. Today, Derek resides in a remote farmhouse cottage on the Duchy of Cornwall Estate, where he continues to create bold, thought-provoking contemporary art inspired by his surroundings.

Traverse Series

The Traverse Series explores the balance between structure and tension through the language of colour and line. Vertical bands press against one another, delineating space yet never quite settling. The interplay of dense, weighted hues with sharp, linear accents evokes both boundaries and possibilities. Beneath the formal clarity lies an undercurrent of quiet containment, a reflection on restraint, order, and the unseen edges we navigate within ourselves and our environments.
